Temple Tanks- Designer Landscapes from Indian History!

As a learner of landscape architecture and design over three decades, I am
fascinated by our ‘Temple-Tanks’, which are ubiquitously dotted along the
length and breadth of our country.

                                               Nataraja Temple Tank, Chidambaram
Temple tanks remain as vestige of the exquisitely designed ‘Public Spaces Landscape’ left overs from history through our great temple architecture. Their beauty of the design lies in its sheer simplicity of its geometry and the accessibility through their ascending steps to the impounded water.

Water being an unique design element; takes the shape of the container, reflect or refract to offer interesting visual perspective, interacts with other natural elements altering micro climate while hosting aquatic flora and fauna too.

                                              Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, Madurai

Our ancient Temples are marvellous in holistic design wherein the towering Positive spaces of Gopurams are balanced uniquely by the Negative spaces of the void and dynamic water in Tanks!
An excellent design principle revealed for the students of Design. In addition to their sacredness Tanks ability to harvest and store water and serve humanity is indeed
awe-inspiring design!

Like all other public spaces the Temple-Tanks are either neglected or mindlessly encroached upon under less than fifty odd years, thereby losing a vital utilitarian
(water harvesting) and public gathering spaces in our growing urban settings!
From the perspective of a Landscaper, how I wish if we repair and rejuvenate these
Tanks will make lovely public spaces of interest, rest and repose!

Shops hiding the Kapaleeswar Tank on North Mada Street

Take the case of Kapaleeswar temple tank in Mylapore, Chennai. Visibility and access
can be enhanced for public through removal of encroached shops and adding a wide
path all around.
Planting of flowering trees and Pergolas with flowering vines along these paths
will complete a perfect setting for the public space!
Well I know it is easier said than done!!!!

25 Years of Landscape Design ! Still to Learn!!

Villa of  Shanmugavel & Gunavanthi

Stepping into Twenty Fifth year of my professional Landscaping certainly brings out mixed emotions, mostly good and hugely satisfying !!

This passionate journey has endowed me with knowledge gaining through my projects over these years.

I take this as an opportunity to express myself, my experiences and few tips for whatever its worth.

The range will include from
Home Gardens to Public spaces Designing.

I hope to share my views on what is relevant and current topics of interest. Though not in any order but in random.

Does Indian has tradition of Gardens?  What does a modern Garden implies ? How does the larger Landscape design help set the urban environment ? Public and Private Garden? I hope my random thoughts and cumulative experience will help unfold answers to these and many more!!
A Landscape may or not have Garden! A Garden may or not have Plants!
